How to Get to Cabarete from Europe: Direct Flights & Best Airports

A lot of our guests ask us about the best way to get from Europe to Cabarete. There are many direct flights from Europe to the Dominican Republic, but finding the most convenient option for Cabarete isn't always straightforward. Not all flights operate daily, and many routes are seasonal.
Cabarete doesn't have its own airport. The closest airport is Puerto Plata (POP), only around 20–25 minutes away, and it's by far the easiest option if you can find a flight that works for you. If Puerto Plata isn't an option, Santiago, Santo Domingo and Punta Cana are the main alternatives.
Below we've put together the current direct flight options from Europe, as well as some of the other useful connections into Puerto Plata and Santiago.

Which Airport Is Best for Flights to Cabarete?
Puerto Plata (POP) is only around 20–25 minutes from Cabarete and is by far the easiest option. A taxi from the airport to Kite House costs around US$35.
Santiago (STI) is around 1.5–2 hours away and is usually our first alternative if there isn't a convenient flight to Puerto Plata. A taxi to Cabarete costs around US$100.
Santo Domingo (SDQ) is around 3–4 hours away, but has many more international connections. A taxi to Cabarete costs around US$200.
Punta Cana (PUJ) has the largest selection of international flights, but is also the furthest away. The drive to Cabarete takes around 5–6 hours, and a taxi generally costs US$400 or more.
If you can find a reasonably priced flight into Puerto Plata, we'd almost always choose it. After a long international flight, being in Cabarete around half an hour after leaving the airport is hard to beat.
Direct Flights from Europe to Puerto Plata
Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is the closest airport to Cabarete.
There are currently two direct connections from Europe:
The Condor flight from Frankfurt to Puerto Plata is nonstop. On the return journey to Frankfurt, the flight makes a short stop in Santo Domingo before continuing to Germany.
The Edelweiss flight from Zürich is seasonal. For winter 2026/27, flights are currently scheduled every Thursday from October 29 through March 25. The flight from Zürich to Puerto Plata is nonstop; the return flight currently makes a stop in Montego Bay.
If either of these flights works from your home airport — or you can easily connect through Frankfurt or Zürich — Puerto Plata is usually the simplest way to reach Cabarete.

From the United States

Puerto Plata has particularly good connections to Canada during the winter season, with direct flights from cities including:

Many Canadian routes are seasonal.
From Latin America
Copa Airlines flies directly from Panama City (PTY) to Puerto Plata. Panama is also a useful connection point if you're traveling from elsewhere in Latin America.
There is also a new service by Wingo between Bogotá (BOG) and Puerto Plata starting November 2026, adding another option for reaching the north coast without connecting through the United States.
Direct Flights from Europe to Santiago
If you can't find a good flight to Puerto Plata, Santiago (STI) is usually the next airport we'd check.
Santiago's Cibao International Airport is approximately 1.5–2 hours from Cabarete by car, making it significantly more convenient than Santo Domingo or Punta Cana.
There is currently one nonstop connection from Europe:
Madrid (MAD) → Santiago (STI) with Air Europa — generally 1–2 flights per week, with operating days varying depending on the time of year.
Because the operating days change, we recommend checking Air Europa directly for your dates.
Other Direct Flights to Santiago
Santiago is particularly well connected to the United States, so it can also be a useful alternative if you don't find a convenient flight to Puerto Plata.

If you're connecting through the US or Panama anyway, it's worth comparing flights into both POP and STI.
Direct Flights from Europe to Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo (SDQ) has considerably more international connections than Puerto Plata or Santiago, particularly from Spain.
The downside is the transfer to Cabarete, which takes around 3–4 hours by car.
Current direct connections from Europe include:
Madrid (MAD) → Santo Domingo (SDQ) with Iberia — daily, with additional frequencies on some days
Madrid (MAD) → Santo Domingo (SDQ) with Air Europa — daily, with additional frequencies on some days
Madrid (MAD) → Santo Domingo (SDQ) with World2Fly — approximately twice weekly
Frankfurt (FRA) → Santo Domingo (SDQ) with Condor — Wednesdays and Sundays during the winter schedule
Paris Orly (ORY) → Santo Domingo (SDQ) with Air Caraïbes
Rome (FCO) → Santo Domingo (SDQ) with ITA Airways — seasonal service beginning winter 2026/27
Santo Domingo can be a good option if the flight schedule or fare is substantially better than flying into Puerto Plata or Santiago. Just remember to factor the longer ground transfer into your decision.
Direct Flights from Europe to Punta Cana
Punta Cana (PUJ) has by far the largest selection of direct flights from Europe. Unfortunately, it's also the major Dominican airport furthest from Cabarete.
The drive from Punta Cana to Cabarete takes around 5–6 hours, so we generally wouldn't choose PUJ if a reasonably convenient Puerto Plata, Santiago or Santo Domingo option is available.
That said, the much larger selection of flights can sometimes make Punta Cana worthwhile.

Schedules vary considerably throughout the year, so for Punta Cana we recommend searching your travel dates rather than relying on particular operating days.
What About Samaná or La Romana?
Two other international airports occasionally appear when searching for flights to the Dominican Republic.
Samaná El Catey (AZS) is geographically much closer to Cabarete than Punta Cana and receives some seasonal European flights. However, flight options are limited and the drive to Cabarete still takes roughly 2–3 hours.
La Romana (LRM) also receives some direct European flights, particularly from Italy and seasonally from Madrid. For Cabarete, however, its location means it is rarely the most practical choice.
If you find an unusually good flight into either airport, they're worth considering, but we would normally search POP, STI, SDQ and PUJ first.
Connecting Through the US, Canada or Panama
If there isn't a convenient direct flight from Europe, you can also reach the north coast by connecting through the United States, Canada or Panama.
For Puerto Plata in particular, Miami, New York and Panama City can be useful connecting points. Santiago also has several direct connections to the US and Panama.
Keep in mind that entry and transit requirements depend on your nationality and the country you're connecting through. In particular, if you're connecting through the United States, make sure you meet US entry or transit requirements even if the US isn't your final destination.
Google Flights is a good place to start when comparing different combinations, but we recommend checking the final itinerary directly with the airline before booking.
Getting From the Airport to Cabarete
By Taxi
A taxi or private transfer is the easiest option, especially if you're flying into Puerto Plata.
From Puerto Plata (POP), the drive takes around 20–25 minutes and a taxi to Kite House costs approximately US$35.
From Santiago (STI), allow around 1.5–2 hours and approximately US$100 for a taxi.
From Santo Domingo (SDQ), the drive takes around 3–4 hours and a taxi costs approximately US$200.
From Punta Cana (PUJ), expect around 5–6 hours of driving and US$400 or more for a taxi.
These prices are approximate and can vary.
If you're comparing flights into different airports, it's worth considering both the transfer time and cost. A flight into Punta Cana may initially look cheaper, for example, but a 5–6 hour transfer and US$400+ taxi can quickly eliminate the savings.
By Bus
If you're traveling on a budget, Caribe Tours is a good option for reaching the north coast. The long-distance buses are air-conditioned and prices are very reasonable.
For Cabarete, you can take Caribe Tours to Sosúa and then continue to Kite House by taxi. A taxi from the Caribe Tours stop in Sosúa to Kite House costs around RD$900 / US$15.
From Santo Domingo, the bus is a particularly affordable alternative to taking a taxi.
It's also possible to travel from Punta Cana to the north coast by bus, but this is a very long journey and involves connections. If you leave Punta Cana in the morning, expect the trip to take most of the day.
For that reason, taking the bus from Punta Cana makes the most sense if keeping the cost down is more important than travel time.
